OHINEMUTU
St Faith's Anglican Church, the second on the site, was built in Tudor style in 1910. Additions in 1965 widened the nave and added the side chapel, which features a sand-blasted window depicting a Christ dressed in a korowai (chief's cloak) seemingly walking on the waters of Lake Rotorua. The interior is richly embellished with Maori carvings and tukutuku lattice panels. One of the founders of the church at Ohinemutu was the American, Seymour Mills Spencer (1810-98), born in Hartford, Connecticut, who for half a century preached to the Arawa. He invariably travelled with an umbrella, at times using it as a tent, and became known as 'the parson with the umbrella'. Spencer is depicted in a small window above the organ chancel, preaching to a group of Maori, his characteristic umbrella unfurled. The headstone of his grave is to the left of the church entrance.
